I do a lot of work with archetypes…recurring storylines in literature and life that help us understand the world around us and give clues about how we fit in it.
Psychiatrist Carl Jung believed that the archetypes are a form of psychological inheritance that contain all of the knowledge and experiences we share as a species. Whereas our DNA passes down our species’ genetic makeup, the archetypes link us to the lessons our ancestors learned about what it is to be human.
While there are countless archetypes, I generally work with the twelve Dr. Carol Pearson named. These include the storylines of the Hero, the Jester, the Sage, the Magician, the Creator, etc.
All of the archetypes have positive traits and shadows. All are powerful ways to gain perspective on the world and most of us identify with multiple storylines at some point in our lives.
Today I’m putting in a plug for the power of the Lover archetype and declaring it the archetype of the decade. “Bold statement,” say all you Heroes and Sages! I can hear it now, “Results are what matters most!” “Knowledge is the only way to the Truth!” I hear you, but let me tell you what I also hear.
As I work with organizations and individuals, I hear a longing to feel connected with others and oneself. I hear a yearning to follow a calling toward a more blissful life. I hear an eagerness for celebrating the beauty of the present moment.
As I walk through life these days, I can’t help but wonder, “Where is the love?” Connecting with people and building intimate relationships have been overpowered by the quick tweet and the passing “Like” of social media. Following one’s passion has been overtaken by the requirements of expensive mortgages, multiple cars and pricey summer camps. Breathing in simple expressions of beauty has been overrun by traffic and news and ads.
Enter the Lover.
More and more I see businesses popping up to fill the lover-less void we have created in our culture over the past several decades. The Lover encourages you to live boldly and follow your passions. She tells you that relationships are more important than money. She encourages you to surround yourself with beautiful places and people that make your heart sing!
Quality time. Quiet listening to the yearnings of the soul. Joy. These are the messages of the Lover.
Purpose and passion in the workplace are emerging as the way to gain more profits. Finding one’s calling is making its way to the forefront of career coaching. “Being” time is touted as the next best childrearing technique. These are all the workings of the Lover archetype finding its way back into our cultural storyline.
As someone who identifies with the Lover storyline, I am thrilled that the Heroes and the Leaders and the Explorers are heeding the call of the Lover. It is with warmth and passion that I invite you to spend the next decade listening to and following your heart!
