As I was walking to get breakfast this morning, I came upon a mural that read, "Why Not Grow?" Right, I thought...why not? For many of you who read this blog, it might seem obvious that we should grow. But what happens when we're not set up for growth?
On Thursday I had the privilege to meet First Creek Middle School students who participate in the YMCA's Eagle Center after school program in Tacoma, WA. Just a couple weeks ago, they created their own UNITY Project. I was excited to hear about their experience and learn more about how they were moving through life.
We talked about a number of things, including how to live big, bold, authentic lives. I asked what would help them live into their most courageous selves. Here is the response that stuck with me most deeply: We need more positive messages. The negative messages that come from home, society, the media or each other can turn into that inner voice that says, "You're not good enough." "You're not worthy." "How dare you think you're special."
When we hear those voices enough, we adopt them as our truth. But that's not the truth. For every story we tell ourselves about how we're not good enough, there is another story we could tell ourselves instead. For every failure, there is a story of resilience. For every shortcoming, there is a story of a unique talent in another area.
These negative voices may surface when we're teens, but they can stick with us long into adulthood. Today I want to look you straight in the eyes and tell you a few things you simply must hear.
You are significant.
You are worthy.
You are resilient.
You are enough.
Whoever you are and whatever you're going through, you have the ability to author an inspiring story. Set yourself up for growth by believing in your own expansiveness. Remember, you get to write the script of your life.
